Abdominal Computed Tomography Scan: A Useful Diagnosis Tool for Early and Delayed Splenic Complications in Malaria
نویسندگان
چکیده
We read with great interest the study on the abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan during acute vivax malaria in South Korea by Kim and others. 1 In our recent analysis of 55 cases of pathological rupture on the spleen in malaria, 2 we found that 23 (42%) were caused by Plasmodium vivax . We therefore agree with Kim and others that infection with P. vivax —less prevalent worldwide than Plasmodium falciparum —likely carry a higher risk of splenic complications than infection with P. falciparum . Acute splenic enlargement, which is as frequent in P. vivax as in P. falciparum infection despite lower mean parasitemia in the former, 3 is likely to be a major determinant of both splenic infarction and splenic rupture in malaria . Splenic enlargement during lethal falciparum malaria likely results from splenic congestion with surface-altered and mechanically altered red blood cells (either infected or uninfected), and with migration or local multiplication of white blood cells. 4– 6 Because patients with vivax malaria rarely die, post-mortem data on the spleen in this context are very limited. 7

A ruptured spleen following colonoscopy is a rare , but potentially lethal complication
......................................... Received: 30-08-11 Accepted: 15-05-12 Abstract Colonoscopy is the paramount diagnostic tool for polyps and lesions in the colon and rectum. Although, the most common cause of complications are bleeding and perforations, diagnostic colonoscopy generally has a low incidence of complications. Less common complications include pneumomediastinum, pneumoperit...

Introduction: splenic artery aneurysm (sAA) is an uncommon and potentially life-threatening clinical entity that carries a risk of rupture and peritoneal hemorrhage. case report: this is a case of a splenic artery aneurysm incidentally diagnosed in a 55-year-old male. Diagnosis was confirmed by abdominal computed tomography (ct) scan and the patient was managed by surgical approach because of t...
متن کاملDelayed Splenic Rupture; Normal Appearing Spleen on the Initial Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) Can Sometimes Be Misleading
INTRODUCTION Delayed splenic rupture (DSR) is an unusual outcome following blunt abdominal trauma. Although DSR is defined as bleeding more than 48 hours after blunt trauma in a previously hemodynamically stable patient, a review of the reported cases in the literature shows that in almost all of the cases the initial CT imaging revealed some form of damage to the spleen. CASE PRESENTATION He...
متن کاملBilateral ureteropelvic disruption following blunt abdominal trauma: Case report
BACKGROUND Ureteral injury occurs in less than 1% of blunt abdominal trauma cases, partly because the ureters are relatively well protected in the retroperitoneum. Bilateral ureteral injury is extremely rare, with only 10 previously reported cases. Diagnosis may be delayed if ureteric injury is not suspected, and delay of 36 hours or longer has been observed in more than 50% of patients with ur...

Objective(s): Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with a wide range of clinical manifestations. Cognitive dysfunction is one of the manifestations that could present prior to the emergence of any other neuropsychiatric involvements in SLE. Cognitive dysfunction is a subtle condition occurring with ahigh frequency. However, there is no data on the correlation of cognitive...
